I'm using Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil, I think it's 75w90. This is in both an 06 Ultra and a 97 Road King.

I would suggest using something heavier than the Harley Syn3 or the current stuff they sell for primary and tranny lubricant. I think the gears need something a little heavier.

No ill effects with the Mobil 1 in cold weather. I'm a year around rider, and it shifts fine a 25 degrees F.

Any real Gear lube, if it is thin enough to run in the engine it is not thick enough for gears in most opinions, myself I use Redline Heavy ShockProof, i have been purchasing lately from The Racers Wholesale site but it is generally available at all HD dealers and most Indy's

Here's a quick story about tranny oil, my freind got her bike back from the dealer, they had to replace the cam plate and oil pump with the install of some 37 cams, she rode the bike and was pleased, she then said what does the cam replacement have to do with the tranny running alot quieter in 5th, no whine, her husband said I put in Amsoil when I changed the oil after the swap, Amsoil 75w-90 or what Sonny said 75w-110, either way it's a winner.

Redlline HD Shockproof in my tranny.  The added benefit is if you develop a leak, the fluid is, well red and is easier to figure out what is leaking somewhere.  Like engine and primary oil questions, whatever you use, change it at the specified intervals and you should have no problems.  Everyone has their own personal preference, I just happen to like the Redline.

I have been using Bel-Ray transmission lube and have been quite pleased, souindss like similar results as the Redline. quieter and smoother shifting.

Another oil thread, so I'm posting an article I find interesting again (hope it's not breaking any rules)...

Note the chart on page 23 that compares the arbitrary weight number system of engine oil and gear oil...

75 weight gear oil is equivalent to 10 weight engine oil in 'true' viscosity...

Engine oil cntains more additives than gear oil which is why as the article states - "it's possible to use engine oil in a transmission but never permissible to use gear oil in an engine"

For what it's worth - I found it interesting...

Redline Shockproof Heavy and like Bob sez, it is a good identifier.  I change this about 20 to 25,000 miles.  Had a guy ride my bike the other day and he could not believe how it shifted.  84,000 miles, set the primary chain kinda tight, run Redline  and it has been quieter to shift ever since I converted to chain as final drive.  And no, I don't know why that is just something I noticed.

I run Amsoil straight 60WT Racing Oil in the engine and the transmission year round. Works well!

NOTE: 99/100 riders who have tried Shockproof Heavy say the same thing. Shockproof Lite will work, just will not quiet the tranny down as much as Heavy.

I used the heavy shockproof for several years but since I ride year round, I thought it's probably a bit thick when it gets down in the 20's F. So I changed the last time to Mobil 1 75W-140 SUV gear oil. Shifts about the same as the heavy....maybe just a fuzz looser. I can feel it engage a bit more than I could with the heavy. 86K miles on this bike. real smooth. The Mobil 1 75W-140 is twice as much as the regular Mobil 1 75W-90 though.
