Just moving to the Dallas area from Nebraska.  I've been with StateFarm for years and the rates remain similar for autos however the bikes are more than double what I was paying.  Who are all the Dallas area people using and what are the rates?

Thanks in advance.

Hmmm, I just posted the a month ago or so that my State Farm rates dropped once again. I'm well under $200/yr for full coverage on an '01 Ultra. I'm in Iowa.
You need to talk to your agent and find out WTF is up.

Moving from Nebraska 320 annually to Texas 370 every 6 months all I get is that state farm can't be competitive and that TX is high.  He said I may want to look some place else.  I can't believe people are paying almost 800 a year on bikes down here.  Just trying to see  who other people are using.

In the Dallas area that wouldn't surprise me at all. Insurance rates are a function of location, prior wrecks/traffic tickets, age and value of vehicle and Credit score not to mention age and gender of driver/owner. Probably the biggest influence is the location - the more populated the more likely of a wreck/theft/vandalism etc. I would think anywhere in Iowa (generally speaking) would be cheaper than Dallas, TX.

I don't know about the Dallas area but I'm in California. I'm with State Farm for everything except my motorcycle. I did have motorcycles on my State Farm insurance however, when I bought my 2010 Softail, my State Farm agent wanted over $800 for full coverage. I have no accidents or tickets and am well past Social Security age plus I qualify for every discount State Farm offers. My HD Dealer recommended a Progressive agent so I called him. He quoted me a little over $490 for the first year due to brokerage costs and from the second year on, it will be $397 per year and this is for the same FULL coverage State Farm wanted over $800 for. Needless to say, my motorcycle insurance is with Progressive and, when I get my project bike back on the road, it will also be with Progressive.

Hope this helps.

Norm.

I'm in Louisiana about 400mi from Dallas, Geico is costing me about half what anyone else would quote and it is still $999.00 a year for two bikes.
I moved from the San Francisco Metro area (Oakland) and am in a rural area where I may see another vehicle every hour or so but the rate is just short of twice what I paid in California. My agent points out that something like 3 out of 4 of our previous Insurance Comissioners are in prison which may point to a trend that may affect rates?

I live in Indianapolis and for full coverage year round riding it cost me $256 a year on a 2008 Ultra from Farmers Insurance.

I'm 20 miles outside of Dallas and use Progressive. It's went down the last 2 years for no accidents, etc... 04 Fatboy, full coverage, kept in garage, $366 this year. Used to use Dairyland but increased every year. I checked with AllState (forget that). Call Progressive, cheapest I've found.

$5 minutes north of Dallas. 99 Road king & 2004 flhti $360/year Dairyland Collision comp and liability. $500 ded. Was with Markel but they were $150 bucks more expensive. No wrecks/ticket.  I am an insurance whore look for the best deal sworn to noone.

Desperado

Live outside of Plano (Dallas northern suburb).  Used Dairyland for years until they ceased wanting to be competative in Texas.  Went with Progressive a couple of years ago.  Just got my 2010-2011 policy quote yesterday for my '05 Ultra with $250 deductable on both comprehensive and collision and $100,000 person/$300,000 each accident bodily injury and $50,000 property damage.  No uninsured/underinsurred or personal injury coverage but will be calling about adding that so it will go up.  You need that.  Over 25% of the drivers in Texas have no insurance at all and many of the others have only the minimum required by law.  Have you looked at medical costs lately?  That's why I'm adding Uninsured/underinsured   Total cost without uninsured/underinsured was $380.

I always tell people when shopping for insurance, cheapest isn't the only thing that you are looking for.  Talk to the guys in the back of the shop - or at least the service writer - and find out which companies pay off quickly and get your bike back on the road in a hurry and which argue with the shop people and require approval for every piece to be replaced and the cost of each piece so that repairs on your wrecked bike take forever.  If in the course of making repairs the shop finds additional damage above the estimate, the delays start all over again with some companies.

Our coverages are very close but I've got uninsured/underinsured also. You definately need that in Big D. As far as Progressive goes, when a buddy of mine totaled his bike 3 years ago Progressive stepped right up for him, payed for his medical, and cut him a check for his bike really quick that was more than what we figured it should have been (he did good). That sold me on Progressive.

Update:  I looked into adding the Uninsured/Underinsured bodily injury at $100,000/$300,000 and it almost doubled the cost of my insurance, adding $321 to the bill.  I have an execellent health insurance policy already, so I guess I'll just stay with that and not add the extra insurance unless someone knows a good reason why this is a dumb approach.

Talked with progressive tonight.  The uninsured and underinsured in this area essentially doubles the premium for motorcycles.  I've heard the uninsured levels in TX can reach almost 1 in 3, which leads me to believe that the penalties for lack of insurance aren't punishing enough.  So the rest of us get to pay double to cover for them.  But I digress.

The only way you can get hurt without the un/under  insured is if you have a person without medical insurance on your bike and they get injured in an accident with an uninsured motorist.  You would be responsible for damages then.

Progressive is 400 less total and includes 3000 in upgrades unless you specify more.  Pipes, air cleaner, race tuner eat that up in a hurry.

08ultra I'm not in Dallas but these folks have treated me well so far here in Houston (Progressive Agents)(no claims filed so not a 'true' test of course)

I double cover myself - keep the UN & UNder insured as Desperado mentioned above and I pay BlueCross / BlueShield ransom too

My Harley dealer went insurance shopping for me.  Ended up with a Formost policy costing $942.00 a year for full coverage on 3 Road Kings, a Low Rider, and a Buell.   The agent is Harley-Davidson Insurance Services Inc., 1-888-691-4337.  I live in Midland, Texas.
