I recently purchased a 10 year old single axle 5x10 single axle utility trailer(AZ-TX).  I just got through stripping off the old and rotting wood(2x6) and was wondering what you guys have used to replace them. I was thinking of a simple design starting with a 2x12 down the middle(where my 03 FLHTC would go) and then go dimensionally smaller towards the sides. What have you guys used to seal the wood?  If you have any photos of your trailer maybe you could post them.

Thanks

:bf:  I forgot to ask about tires. It currently has passenger tires and I wanted to get regular trailer tires. It needs a 225x15.  Any suggestions.  I'm not rich by any means but was just looking for a good general use tire.
Thanks again

If you can swing it, why not use pressure treated lumber, let it season out a bit then stain it. It'll last longer than regular wood. As for tires, for no more weight than you're going to haul on that size of a trailer the passenger car tires are probably ok as long as they're in good shape, ie; not dry rotting. Otherwise, GoodYear Marathon and Caralisle are good trailer tires. I just put 4 new Caralisles on my v-nose enclosed trailer. About $70 a piece

Use trailer tires because they are designed for carcas life. Car tires are designed for thread life.

Goodyear marathon is the best trailer. Carlyle is one of the not so good. Google TIRE RATING TRAILER.

I remember what the farmer said."If you want good oats you have to pay a fair price. If you want cheap oats, they are a lot less after they have been thru the horse" !

When I re did mine. 5x 10 flooring I replaced it with 2 x 6 treated and ran all the boards up tite instead of the gabs that it had  out of the factory, also used more bolts 2 in every cross member. On the rubber I use just good car tires have made several trips cross country trips w/o any problems made 2 trips from KY to strugis (SD) but if ya have a
tsc store in your area they sell trailer tires mounted on white rims at a good price

There are typically two types of pressure treated dimensional lumber available.  The first, is called "appearance grade" and it doesn't have the same rot resistance as the stuff specified for "in ground use".  If this is a closed trailer, apply some PL 400 between the edges of the boards to seal them.

I just ride the bike. Problem solved. :smileo:

Thanks for the suggestions!  I think I'll go with pressure treated lumber and Marathons.  Besides bike related uses it will also be used to pick up mulch, move the lawn mower, pick up and move appliances, mabe do some junkin',  take up space in the driveway and maybe a trip from Chicago to Daytona this spring :smiled:.

Thanks for taking the time to reply!

Every couple of years, I mop some Thompsons on my open trailer. Used treated wood when I redecked it and it's going on 15 years.

A trailer is handy to have. I usually pickup 3 - 4 broke down bikes each year for people.
Forget the bull"Potty mouth" - it's all about two wheels and a motor!
