Looking for a fairing mount kit for my Garmin 660 GPS. Harley has one for $55.00. Any one using it or does anyone know of an alternative.

whitebagger 1, I have a Garmin Zumo 660 that I had the local HD dealer (mechanic that I have learned to trust) install via the faring mount and I love it. I was originally going to go with the handlebar mount and changed my mind at the last minute, and am very glad I did.

My initial extended use was our the trip the wife and I took to Reno for street vibrations and the trip alone confirmed to me that I had made the proper choice in locating it to the faring. It is easier to see on the faring rather than to take your eyes off the road momentarily to view on the handlebars - my opinion anyway!!

Good luck with whatever you decide.

topend97, here are the photos I promised regarding my fairing mounted GPS (Garmin Zumo 660). I should also note that I had the new wiring harness for the GPS (by HD) that allows the navigation voice to interupt my radio, MP 3 player, CB, and CD and go thru my helmet headset when navigation instructions are provided. Works awesome!!

can you tell me if your GPS is the regular Garmin zumo 660 or is it H.D. road tech version. I also was thinking of buying zumo 660 but was not sure if i could get it hooked up to H.D. harness so i could use my head set. Thanks In advance

GaryD

I have the Harley 660 and the fairing mount and love it. I already have too much crap on my handlebars and thought the fairing mount would be less vibration prone.
Geezerglide, what do you mean by "new" wiring harness? I bought mine a year ago and I have all those benifits like playing throught the speakers. I also had the fairing mount for the old Quest unit, but it was on the right side. Too bad it couldn't be installed in the center.

ultra 05, mine is the HD Zumo Road Tech that I purchased at the local Harley dealer here in Redmond, Oregon in September of this year. I also had them install the unit for me. Got a 20% off deal the purchase price.

GARYD, the new wiring harness that I referenced is noted in the 2011 HD Catalog (page 623 - item E) and listed as a "New" item. I do not know when it came on line and available to the public. But it works very well, and even with the cost of $149.95, I would do it again.

ultra 05, just re-read the info related to the new wiring harness and it states - "Available exclusively for Harley-Davidson Road Tech Zumo Navigation System".

As a suggestion, if you are considering the standard Garmin 660 or the HD Road Tech, I would highly suggest you look into this harness and it's functionality before you make your choice. I for one can not imagine being without this item and the way it works with the HD Harmon Kardon communication system.   :bike:

Can the HD fairing mount be installed on the right side? I have the radar detector already on the left side.

I would like to thank everyone for their input. I just ordered the fairing mount for mine. It is the regular 660 so I'm hoping that all those wires will accomadate using my helmet speakers.

inspector, I am not sure whether or not the fairing mount bracket is left/right oriented or not - i.e. required on one side or the other. As far as the internals of the fairing, I don't see why it would not work. I would call your local HD dealer and ask it the bracket has to be installed one a specific side of the fairing.

I think they orient the GPS on the left side is due to the ease of operation with the left hand which would not be a problem operating with the clutch hand as much as the throttle hand - i.e. right hand. At least that is my opinion.

I operate the MP3 player while riding but do not do any navigation input while riding. I always stop if I need to change routes/destinations so as not to interrupt the concentration required while riding.

Hope that helps! :bike:

Mount for the 660 is left only. Mount for the Quest was right only.

Roger

Thanks for the reply. I was interested in regular garmen 660 because it it 200.00 to 300.00 cheaper on line then what H.D. wants for road teck 660. But I think i better shy away from that unless someone knows for sure that it would hook up to H.D. harness so i could use it with our helmet headsets.

Thanks GARYD for the reply.Which Quest are you refering to,which has a right hand mount?

GaryD

Inspector, They both did. The Quest 1 or 2.
I had the H-D branded Quest 1
I'd still have mine if the screen wasn't so small.

ultra05, I really don't think any HD dealer would be knowledgeable enough to tell you if the harness will work for the regular 660, however, I would contact Garmin directly either via phone or e-mail and ask them. I have spoken to them a couple of times both ways, phone and e-mail, they are pretty responsive. I can appreciate your concern regarding the cost savings between the two, as I paid about $1,000 for my unit with the harness and the HD dealer mechanic (friend) doing the installation.

After seeing what it took to install and hook up the harness, I am glad I made the decision to let them install.

One thing I do like about the HD Road Tech is that they have everyone of the HD dealers locations installed. I could concevieably inter a HD dealer in any City/State and the GPS would take me to their door!! This has been useful to me on a couple of occasions when I was in a different City/State and had no clue where the nearest HD dealer was located, or even if one existed.

Good luck with whatever decision you make!!
