I have a one piece jack shaft (not sure who's, it was on there when I bought the bike in August of 2010), it has worked fine up until last week. I hit the starter button and it ground for a split second then turned over the motor.  It fired right up and I did not think anymore about it....until two blocks later when I stopped to get gas and all it would do is spin without engaging the gear on the flywheel......stupid Indians!!!! (it is the same starter, clutch, etc. as the pre-93 Big twins). I pulled the primary off and all the teeth are in good shape on both the clutch basket and the pinion.  I sent the starter to Tech Tornado and they replaced the clutch, I put it all back together and the same problem, everything spins but the starter pinion/jack shaft did not move.  I tested the starter out of the bike and it extends as it should and spins......I looked in the one piece jack shaft and there is nothing in there but a bore with splines......nothing for the starter shaft to push against to move the pinion gear out to engage the ring gear.......I guess what I am asking is what in the world am I missing?  What does the starter shaft actually push against, is there suppose to be a spring in here somewhere?  If so what is it's function?

TIA, any and all help is appreciated!!!

By the way, the jack shaft looks just like the Drag Specialties, which also looks just like the All Balls......

get a service & repair manuel for your scoot, it helps alot.

All Balls sells 1 piece jackshafts.
That isn't saying it's theirs, just a place to start

It's not about gun control.
It's about CONTROL.

I appreciate the replies, first, I have all the factory manuals from Indian, for the bike, the motor, accessories, etc. The problem is that a previous owner (I am the third and final owner) installed a one piece jack shaft.  It looks just like the pictures of the Drag Specialties or All Balls (they both look as if they are made by the same company and then marketed byte Drag or All Balls).  I just do not know how the thing is suppose to go together.  When I took it apart there were fewer pieces than what they say comes in the new kit.  I have had a very difficult time finding anyone who has any experience with these kits......

Make sure when you put the primary cover back on the jackshaft goes in the hole on the primary cover.

Thanks for the advice.., what is the best way to make sure the jack shaft is in the bushing in the outer primary? :nix:

TIA

you just slide it in and then tighten the little bolt in the middle of the jackshaft then fold over the little locking tab.. east as pie..

Do you have a coupler on the end of your starter?

Make sure you have the spring between the shaft and the starter.

I'm bored.

That is the most useful info yet, the spring goes between the starter and the end of the jack shaft :bike:

When it failed to start I pushed it home two blocks and took it apart, there was no spring and no spring clip or thrust washer, so I had no idea on how this thing was suppose to go together.  At any rate, I could not find a spring clip and I have no idea how much tension the spring is suppose to exert so I ordered a new jack shaft conversion kit ($90.00) should be here in a couple days....
