i gots an '06 FatBoy / T-Max, was in the city today & pulled up to a stoplight & everything shut down,, deader than a door nail,, except my GPS was still powered up.  pulled the seat,, started checking connections, & fuses,, no blown fuses & all connections tight. i've got new(ish ) 2ga battery cables,, pulled the neg from the battery,, waited about 20 seconds,, reconnected,, no little spark when i touched the neg post,, no sound from the fuel pump,, dash is dead,, no lights
called AAA
got it home, battery is at 12.95V on the multimeter
was getting dark, put on the cover & called it a day,, will mess with it tomorrow

i figure it could be,,
stator,
coil,
Voltage Regulator

i did notice last month when i was riding down thru Death Valley, / Vegas, that the chrome coil cover was getting a weird white dust/haze around the plugwire boots, so i put on new stock wires

any ideas ?
ya don't know, until ya know... now i know

Not sure why you are leaning to stator, coil or voltage reg if the battery is charged but the bike is still dead.

I hate to get this basic, but found when dealing with my kids it helps.  Please define "deader than a doornail" and how your GPS gets it's power.

You said the dash is dead as well as the lights. How about the horn?

Sounds a lot like the main relay or ign switch took a dump.

Are you sure you checked the main breaker?

How did you check fuses?  Look at them or actually ohm them out?

Do you have the service manual with the circuit drawings?  With them you should be able to split the circuits down and nail this in a few minutes.

ViennaHog

If truly the bike is dead, few options left. faulty ground or positive connection from the battery on or master fuse gone. Not much more than that. Easy to figure.

Find the positive post on the starter (the one that comes from the battery) and check against battery negative. If you see voltage, move to main ground strap to the frame and measure it to battery plus.

Main fuse, well you figure it out

moose

more than likley the circut breaker took a dump. happend to mine did the same thing

thanks for the input, i don't have too much experience chasing down electrical issues ( that's why i posted )

Rags,, i do have the service manual with the circuit drawings, & will re-check circuit breaker & also continuity on the ign switch, GPS gets it's power directly from the batt, just visually checked the fuses, as i don't normally carry the multimeter in my bags, ( but maybe i should start, lol ) but as i said,, was getting late & was a long day,,,,

Vienna,, will check these out tomorrow when i get in from work

moose,,  thanks bro

Battery voltage looks fine, so stator and regulator probably good. Also doubt it has anything to do with plug wires.
Everything dead is circuit breaker. Gps probably hardwired to battery thus still works. Or ignition switch, doubtful tho
wasting time

12.95 is too high voltage for the battery isn't it?
Listen to the jingle the rumble and the roar.

kik

12.95 is fine. you don't want it to drop below the 12v mark really, except when you crank it it will drop.

NorCal Dog

thanks guys,, will pick up a circuit breaker on the way home from work today
ya don't know, until ya know... now i know

I would vote for the Ignition switch being bad if the circuit breaker doesn't fix it.  If the bike is totally dead it should not be very hard to diagnosis it.

tmwmoose

maybe the wire harness conection is poor at the ignition switch like loose???

harleyjt

You can check the circuit breaker very easily with an ohmeter.  Could be the frame ground. Could be the ignition switch.    I'd check the cb with the ohmeter for continuity, then check for voltage thru the ignition switch.  Find out where the voltage stops.

in case you don't know; since battery cables been undone you will have to reinitialize the t-max.

NorCal Dog

picked up a circuit breaker, but it was already dark by the time i got in last night

gonna spend a couple of hours at the tattoo shop tonight after work, so i'll finally get at the scoot tomorrow morning

i know all about the re-initializing process for the T-Max, thanks for the reminder

big boss man called this morning & said we ain't working today,, i said n/p as i got's things to do anyways

disconnected batt
put the fatty on the lift
pulled the wheel
pulled the mudflap
pulled the CB
installed 40a CB
reconnected batt
gots power again  :hyst:

me happy

thanks for the help  :chop:

I almost hate to be the one to bring this up, but on the baggers at least there was a recall/service bulletin to swap out the 40 AMP with a 50.

the 40a replaced a 30a on my Fatty, so i should be good for awhile,, but while i had the mudflap off, i 86'd the charcoal canister & figure it'll be a perfect place to relocate the coil & get rid of that damn seatpost,, so may drop a 50 in then  :scoot:

UH...I assume by your name that youlive in CA...Don't you need the charcol canister to pass the emissions out there??

you work for the EPA ?  :hyst:

uhhh,,, no sir,, i DIDN'T pull the cannister
or put in non EPA approved cams
or change the exhaust
& AC
that everybody else in this free country is free to do at any point in time

No, none of that stuff is necessary since they aren't testing bikes for emissions in California. I'm not worried, though/ If they do start testing, I'll just put a $20 on the seat when they start their inspection like my father used to do back in Chicago for a car safety sticker. It worked for him. Good old Illinois.
