I've got an 07 Street Glide that I'm going for the shovelhead look with (vintage early tourpak, white bags/pak and retro-inspired scheme on tank paint/emblems). The finishing touch to make me smile would be to use the older chrome oval air cleaner, and I'm wondering if anyone on here has thoughts on the best way to do it (stock throttle body).

I'm considering fabbing a flat backing plate, use a big K&N oval filter, and re-route the breathers. Is there a stock part that would work, and save me the work? The engine is punched out to 103 with SE 10.5's, 259e cam and Larry's Stage2+ heads. So I'm thinking with the bigger filter and external breathers it might be a functional upgrade over the SE/football setup, not just a cosmetic change.

We have done a fair amount of back to back testing on air cleaners. Some was only for our own testing other testing was done for a manufacture. A air cleaner that is larger is only helpful if the current set up you have is not up to the task. ( not speaking about backing plate design) We just completed two 98 inch engines. They had your normal SE set up. With the K&N filter in place we where at 104/ 109, we installed a zippers filter and the power went up to 107/112 back to back. We did have to increase the main jet to get there.

The engine is a air pump, if you have a filter that is limiting flow then it may cost you power.

But installing a huge filter that has a rated flow number is only the start, if the backing plate is not able to correctly direct that air flow then it will be the next limiting factor in the process.

Hiya Harp;

I've always been into that vintage shovel look as well.

I don't know if it works with what you have in mind, but S&S does make a kit to fit the old teardrop breather on TC motors. I've been running one on my 2000 RK for some time now, with great results.

I'm running one on an 02 Dyna (carbed) Don't know if it'll apply to a TB, but what I did was get another factory backing plate ( the plastic one) cut the bottom open, use a little heat to soften and mold the edges to conform to the ham can oval...  It takes a stock size element (I use a K&N replacement element) and made a little bracket with 2 studs to mount the older style cover .  I HAD pics of it, but not sure I still do.  Been on for 7-8 years now..
Got a case of dynamite, I could hold out here all night

K&N make a kit to do what I think you want, but you would need to change the breather setup for
venting outside.

This is the one that fits an 07 FLHX.

The SnS might be the simplest way to go, thanks for the link.
The K&N kit looks like it's for the football cover though. I found this kit for a Sportster: http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=RK-3929
That would let me use the chrome oval lid, can anyone tell me if the sporty carb throat size/bolt pattern is the same as my TB? TIA

Might want to look into the Arlen Ness "Big Sucker" , those support one of his round covers.

Anything attached in the last 8 days or so is missing due to our server issue. Anyone that has posted an attachment may edit their post and attach it again. I'm not sure if we will be able to recover them or not.

Thanks for the feed back.  I was experiancing a similar issue on another forum so was actually wondering if I was having a PC or browser, something!

Anyone here know if the throat size/bolt pattern is the same on a sportster carb as my '07 TB? K&n has an oval air cleaner kit for them but couldn't answer the question when I called them.

I adapted the the early evo sportster S-E filter to my 44cv carb it should bolt right on your tb you just got to make some simple brackets to run from the breather bolts /fittings to the backing plate no big deal the kit uses a K&N filter. spent a morning at work mounting it road home and turned right around and went back to work and removed it I have a 107 and it was suffocating bad, square inch for square inch  the XL K&N was much smaller than my extra large zippers filter. With that said I have a backing plate, filter and radius inlet for sale :teeth:

Just curious where the gain was on the chart, over a wide range or more toward the upper end?
