Burst fuel line

Put a new set of OEM fuel lines in my gas tank last year. One of them burst in my tank this year. When replacing them I noted the OEM replaced lines were rated SAE 30R9. I looked this rating up and saw they are not for submersion in fuel. In fact several sites mentioned this rating of line could burst if submersed in fuel. They are not rated for submersion yet Harley is selling them for placement in the fuel tank. I called Harley three weeks ago to ask them about it and guess what. They never got back with me on the issue. Surprise.... Has anyone else had this issue or any suggestions?

Coyote

Are you sure they did not suffer a hole rubbed through them?

Lahhnn

Can never be sure about a hole, but I placed them in there so they were not touching or rubbing against anything. Also when I say burst I mean disintegrate with little pieces of line all through the tank.

Got any pic's of the line that burst??? SAE 30R9 hose should never be used in a submersible application.

Lahhnn, when you originally bought the new hoses from HD, where they in a sealed package or just loose cut stuff?? Reason I ask is maybe the parts guy just cut some oil line hose and gave you that.

I thought all the HD internal fuel line hoses were clear with ridges??? Have they changed??

Lahhnn

They were in sealed the bag.  These are black "rubber" formed hoses part numbers 62357-95 and 62358-95. I've checked two different set's of these OEM hoses and they both have SAE 30R9 on them. I'm staring to think Harley messed up.

Ed Y

You didn't give us any info on your bike? Is it possible these are the hoses that should be mounted on the outside of the tank??? I don't have any parts books to check??

wholehog

if you search the p/n it shows as internal fuel hose on MM efi bike

ThumperDeuce

My 2004 Deuce parts manual shows 62357-00 for the pump to filter hose.  You may have a old part.
Idiots are fun, no wonder every village wants one.

That's right they are the lines from the pump to the filter and from the filter to the outlet for a 97 Road King EFI. They are for inside the tank. I've taken them out several times to replace the filter, repaint the tank etc. They are OEM. The first set came via Mann's Harley in Edinburg, IN, the second from Louisville Harley. Both set's were ordered from Harley as the dealer's did not have them is stock. Again both set's came in the sealed bag's and both sets of lines have SAE 30R9 printed on them. I don't have pictures of the burst line.

well I doubt MoCo will listen to you unless you really press the issue with them or unless it goes through an authorized dealer....you need to get an "RQID" number from MoCo....

call them back, there's only a few people working the customer service phone and they should have it in there against your VIN, name, phone number.....

maybe easier just to get an aftermarket replacement

The lines are molded (formed). If I buy a straight length of submersible fuel line, there's no way I can put it in  without it rubbing. The clearances just aren't there. Is there a way to mold it?

I didn't have any rubbing going on in mine, ended cutting the hose shorter than the original and it worked great...IME

What year bike do you have? Is it an MM EFI system?

He said 1997 and MMM type. If it's the OEM part number, it's got to be fuel submersible.

Mine was a 2002,Delphi,sorry didn't catch the Magneti Marelli.

i would think the parts personnel at the dealer should funnel that info back to HD via their parts contacts.  Obviously a bad procurement if its the wrong line.  I can't believe the spec itself is wrong, been too many years.   Someone didn't catch it.  Another idea is to contact NHTSA and open a complaint.

Here's a pic of a burst fuel line a friend of mine encountered recently after he installed it in a '01 FLHTC (mm efi). I think the tank setup for this one and a '97 RK would probably be the same. I asked him to check and see if he still had the parts #'s on the lines he got. The line wasn't in his tank very long at all (2 days and a few miles). He took it back to the dealer. All they would do is say "Wow, that's weird" and gave him a discount on a new one. He installed that and hasn't had any problems yet. I forgot I have a '99 FLT parts book in my shop. Went and checked and the internal fuel line hoses are the same part #'s as the ones posted by Lahhnn.

Here is the HD customer service info:

If the black rubber hose is stamped "SAE 30R9" it is definitely NOT "fuel submersible". Unless it's mislabeled. 30R10 is the SAE rating for fuel submersible hose.

Harley-Davidson knows enough to use the correct fuel line in their factory if the lines were made here. If there were a problem like the wrong fuel line, it probably would have happened at a vendor. We don't have all of the facts.

Snorth

When I replaced the fuel filter earlier this year with the HD stock filter, the hose burst on the test ride. Ended up having to use a drag specialties fuel filter.  Just by looking at them you can see the HD stock hose is much flimsier.  :wtf:

I agree its a vendor issue.  Harley isn't going to be building their own fuel lines. They procure it from someone.  Probably from china now.
