Hello all,

Short time reader, first time poster.....I have recently moved from Las Vegas, NV to Okinawa Japan.  My 05 FXSTBI is still making its way here.  I have some time before the bike is up and running legally here on island.  I have to send it up to Tokyo for an emissions test then have it JCI'd.  During a few of my rides, I noticed at high RPMs, usually when down shifting or near my shift point, a tapping noise.  I started to think it was something tapping the Primary cover but after doing some random readings through out other forums, I started to get a different idea.  So before I got to far in my theories, I figured I would ask a few people here on the forums.  What it your diagnosis?  The bike has 15k miles on it.  Thanks for any help that you can provide.

Welcome, difficult to diagnose these noises, especially on the net. check for loose parts, heat shields, etc. Primary chain adjustment. Do you have the OEM cam chain tensioner system and has it been inspected?

A few years ago, I thought I had a knocking sound in my engine, only heard it at certain speeds, couldn't find anything wrong with engine or primary. Cleaning the bike I found the front brake rotor loose. Tighten screws, no more knock. Unlikely culprit on your bike, just trying to illustrate how strange the outcome can be.

I had a bad gas cap throw me for a loop. Sounded like a rattling lifter or something in the cam chest. fwiw.

IF the primary chain is too loose, more than 3/4 inch upward motion when checked, the chain Can hit inside and make a noise. Check the free play cold. Think you have the old system of adjustable shoe and small inspection cover to make adjustments.

Care if you do. I use a 9/16 Deep socket and 3" exstention so not to loose the adjuster (drop down loosely) , keeping it taunt in my hand when nut is loosened enough to move it up for the tighter adjustment IF NEEDED. (3/4 inch total movement good)

Thanks very much you all.  I thought i remember seeing something regarding the chain tensioner.  I am pretty sure it is the stock one.  (i am not the original owner).  When the bike makes it here, I will be sure to do that look over.  Is there a better solution for it, if it happens to be the culprit?

IF you are talking about the primary chain?  The adjustment is a Common needed thing. After miles on the motor the double chain Does stretch. No problems to do the adjustment needed and after you have it tightened up to the specks.....Should be a Long time before it loosens again.

Nice to know I'm not the only one.
