In a closed container, indefinately. A lot depends on temp and humidty and how much the surface of the fuel is exposed to the atmosphere. Stabilizer can be added and I've never had an issue with winter storage of my bike. I always try to have close to a full tank as well before putting it away. All ethanol fuels like to attract moisture so the less surface area on top the less likelyhood of problems that way.

SORRY SHOULD HAVE SAID MY FULL FUEL TANK ON BIKE

Startron is supposed to be a good fuel stabilyzer. I've had good luck with Seafoam.

FLTRI

IME humidity is the worst condition for fuel storage...especially when the tank is vented to air as with removal of the vapor canister, poor cap vent valve operation or seal.

Had a customer show up in September last year for a tune but neglected to mention the bike had been in storage in Mississippi throughout the past summer.

The bike was down on power...until I questioned the customer and replaced the fuel with fresh.

I have used gas that was in a 5 gal plastic container for over a year with no problems. Also the gas that's in my lawnmower or snow blower is a year old when I go to use them the next year and I have no problems starting those - of course they have StaBil in them.

If you are going to store/use modern 10% ethanol gas for more than a month STABIL or other stabalizer is mandatory. Injector damage, fuel tank corrosion and hose issues can result. I have seen this in the Tankers I have used to transport the gas, Pickups and motorcycles I have repaired as well as the half a dozen lan mowers I worked on last year. I love seafoam. It works Awesome to clean up fuel systems!

Mountainman, I agree with you even though I don't have any problems with the gas I usually keep in the 5 gal container(used for emergencies mainly).  Everything else I use StaBil.

This months issue (April)of Motorcycle Consumer News has a great unbiased article on fuel additives, octain boosters and  ethanol treatments. Very very informative.

Gary, could you relay what it said in general about octane booster?

I went to Barnes and Noble today to find this issue and they don't handle it. I don't know were else to look. The clerk didn't even know where to send me to try to find it. Smalltown America has its disadvantages. Any place on-line I might try? I really don't want to subscribe, just want the April issue to read this article.

Same here, I always use sealed storage containers with either Sta-bil or Sea Foam. A friend of mine never caps his storage containers and always has starting problems on small power equipment. I told him what my thoughts were, that it was losing its volatility to evaporation but he still does it and still has problems even though a small engine mechanic told him the same thing. Some people :banghead:  I usually try and avoid any E10 blend especially if its the time of year I know my bike may set for awhile before the next ride and never get it for the power equipment.

I will try to attach the article

I guess you'll just have to buy the mag or go to Motorcycle Consummer News website.

The page is 817k each(2)  and HTT limit is 350k.
I can't believe a simple single page is so big.

Is Seafoam actually considered a stabilizer? I use it several times a year during riding season, but did not know it could be used as a stabilizer during storage. I have never read the can.

The bottom line for me is IF I used it before, I wouldn't use it now.
Each booster has different additives and chemical makeup so will work differently between each other.
In their opinion they didn't really work that great.

Been using Stabil for years, especially in the 2-stroke stuff. Stabil nowadays has several flavors available, may as well take a peek at what they have:

Since they have been feeding us ethenol, I really should love the stuff because I've made a fortune off of it. Before ethenol, I might have had 3 or 4 carbs to clean out in a year, Now, it's more like 40 or 50 a year. Before ethenol, a carb cleaning a was pretty basic, a can of carb cleaner and some high pressure air. My first carb vat lasted me about 5 years. Today I go through about 2 or 3 5 gallon carb vats a year.
Best thing for a defense against ethenol and old gas, is drain it before parking or storing it. I've drained more full tanks of treated gas into my waste barrel than I can count. I've never before seen a moldy carb, but ethenol gave me a new education on carb cleaning. NOTHING works to treat against it or stabilize it.
The fuels I use in my lawn equipment, come in cans from the hardware store already mixed and has in infinite shelf life. I buy it by the gallon.  When I gotta use the lawn mower, weed eater or chainsaw, I fill it, use and then drain the left over back into the can.  My bikes, if they sit any time at all, get drained and the fuel then goes to cleaning parts.

EASY

Easy ricer I agree 100%

I have been cleaning carbs for 30 years and my sons dirt bike stymied this year. Not only were ALL the jets TOTALLY solid in corrosive crud.... The transmission has a corrosion line about 1/2 way up where the fuel drained into the cylinder (rust seized piston!), filled up the crank case and corroded crudded it horribly! I could not figure it out... WTF??? I looked at the fuel tank... He left the petcock on all winter.... Yep No wonder he said the the crank case oil was funky... Talk about a mess... EVERYTHING the fuel was in contact with is NASTY...

I grew up within a few miles of the ocean, everything rusted and corroded... I have never seen rust and corrosion and crud like what oxygenated ethanol fuel creates in a period of 3-4 months...
