just put a set of 12.5" apes on my fatboy and now i'm thinking i made a mistake. Difficult to get a comfortable position on them. Maybe should have gone to drag bars. what you think???

Try them for a while and see what you think.  I am not a fan of apes.  I had them on a Triumph before and never real liked them.  I have some low profile Chubby drag bars on my Deuce and the geometry for me is very comfortable.
Idiots are fun, no wonder every village wants one.

I hav Chubby beachbars and love them.  Very comfortable

I have a little over 500 miles on them so i'll give it a lil more time. Feels like i need less of a wrist angle. Crap... who knows?!

Have you tried moving them to different positions?

I ran apes long ago, liked them just fine, they always felt good to me. Nowadays, tall bars make my hands go numb. I run drag bars because I like my hands below my heart level. Circulation ain't what it used to be, and gravity actually helps.

EzyRyder

yes... but still messin with it at different spots forward and backward

I'm a Drag Bar fan, always have been.I run mine on 8" risers. Not a fan of apes, but if my hands are above my shoulders these days, they go numb.So I couldn't use them anyway.    Coff 06

I've got 16's and have them pushed pretty far forward. Don't let the windshield stop you from going forward. You can work out a solution later if you like them there.
I will agree that at times my hands go a little numb, but I look badass. (Um, yeah.)

EzyRyder

Apes do look bad ass and is part of why i got them. no windshield to worry bout. i pushed them forward after my ride today so i'll see how it is with them more forward. Do want some kind of comfort tho.

I am the opposite of the OP, Drag bars hurt my neck and hands go numb pretty quickly.  I run 14" Cycle Smith on my scoot and Love the feel.

I run 10"ers ,my arms are straight out. got a budy that runs 14" ers  and his arms are straight out,but he is 6'4". no one else can tell you what works for you ,everyone is different ( height ,reach etc.)

I ran both apes and "T" bars on my old FXSTC and now run 16" apes on my FXSTS.  I prefer apes that have some pullback and drop in the ends of the bars. Those that have the grip portion flat or close to right angles to the main rise of the bar feel odd to me.  If you have trouble with numb hands because they are above your heart while riding you need to get to the gym!!  Seriously, good aerobic fitness is a great benefit every second you are alive, not just when you are riding. Gloves that are too tight and have poorly designed seams also contribute to numb hands.

My numbness is caused by 2 surgeries on left shoulder,1 on left hand,1 on right shoulder,2 on right hand.I don't need a gym.I run heavy equipment and do construction labor          Coff 06

Cof: As always, personal situations dictate good ergonomics when riding.  I know the drill, I've worked construction for decades framing, masonry etc. but hard work doesn't always equal good exercise. BTW, good lookin' Springer, I'll never sell mine.

I ran the RK-II bars for several years, then went to 11" Santee Apes, and now the 12.5" Apes from Wild-1.
The 11" worked great, but seemed a bit lower than I 'thought' I wanted; so I switched to the 12.5" apes.

At first I had all sorts of numbness and shoulder pain (after reallylong rides), but I liked the aggressive position.
Then.... I lined them up with my forks, making a straight line, and they come back to me more.
Now I'm comforatble ALL the times, with no numbness or shoulder pain.

I've always thought if I get a second bike (softail, dyna, etc.) I'd go with the Santee 11" apes, they just sit a bit lower (feels like 2-3").

14s on the FLH shovel, currently with a windshield.
Drags on the 09 FXDF but I did install risers with 2" more pullback than stock, made a huge difference for me.
