That is the name for it right, by the HD books?  Anyhow towards the end of the season it seemed it didn't want to stay up as good as it had.  Anyhow, doing my ready for the season checklist and was looking for any info.  02 RK, is there more one spring there, do they break or wear out?  Parts sold seperately?  Anyhow I am looking at the manual, just wondering from the computer who has worked on one. Thanks for the help.

There is but one.
They do wear out.
They are about six bucks.

Might just be dirty and need lubrication mine gets sluggish if I don't maintain it.
Listen to the jingle the rumble and the roar.

Thanks guys ! I was looking at it and it's either broken or not sliding properly.  Probably just pick one up, it has served me well.

for 6 bucks,it's a good idea to have a spare with you.Last year on our trip I dropped over a curb and broke mine,so I tied it up with a bungie cord and when I got to the motel I replaced it with one that I brought with me.My wife thought I was smart for having a spare, but really I just happened to see it laying on the bench before we left so I put it in the bag.You never know...

Clintster

Bought one today, another crisis averted, yuk.  Thanks again, Clint

Stretch the spring open on one side, stick a penny in.  Do the same on the other side.  Doe this between as many of the coils as you need to to make the spring longer and easier to install.  Did it that way when I replaced the spring on my EG.  No pic but hope the explanation helps:-)

I remember that someone posted a way to do it by removing the tab that locks the stand in the down position but I can't remember the details.

Very cool on the penny trick. Truck any chance you remember the removal trick ?

I'm not sure about newer bikes (never had to take the kickstand off my '87 FXR), but on my '79 FXS you supported the bike and raised the kickstand.  Take the kickstand tab off and turn the kickstand 180 degrees in the wrong direction and remove/install spring.  Turn kickstand back to the correct "up" position and reinstall tab.  Takes a minute...
