Diagnosing exhaust gasket leak, also gasket choice

I know this has been asked before,  I did a search and couldn't nail down anything definitive.  Over the winter I took my carbed 01 RK to a 95, .030 Cometic HG, Andrews 21 cams and Gaterman 1023 lifters.  Also switched to a V&H pro pipe.  I've got about 400 trouble free miles on it now, but there is a very faint light tick that is driving me nuts.  I'm fairly sure (but not positive) it is an exhaust leak.  It is very very quiet, I have other people listen and they say they can't hear it, but I know it's there.  It doesn't increase with rpm, but what is weird is if I'm past say 1/4 throttle it gets louder, and also it momentarily sounds like the exhaust note is coming from the front of the bike, not the muffler. It also changes tone, sounds like open drag pipes.

When I installed the Pro-pipe, I had to use the SE exhaust gaskets or I could not even get the trans mount bracket hole to line up.  Not even close with the stock HD gaskets.  Through reading on here I have found the SE gaskets are not very well liked, so that's an easy swap.  What should I replace with?  Kury 482, Cometic, etc?  Local Indy says he has a few in stock but I won't be able to get there until Monday to check them out.

One other potential issue - should I have used some sealant on the O2 bung plugs?  Right now I have them in there dry.

No ACR's in the heads so it's not that.

I like to use ant-seize because they can be a bitch to unscrew if they've been on for awhile. In fact I was just looking at some exhaust instructions that recommend that.

I use 2 SE gaskets per head with my V&H pipe . Leaked with just 1 per head

I use SE gaskets all of the time but I coat them with copper high temp permatex.  (Sensor safe of course).  Haven't had a leak doing this yet.

Hmm, interesting idea.  I already use it on the studs.

I use the sealant not the anti seize.

Same here, hated them until I started doing this, no problems since
If you don't have a sense of humor you probably have no sense at all.

The SE gaskets are the only gaskets that would not leak with my Boarzilla. But I will try that next time for added insurance.

I used the copper high temp sealant on "all" shovel exhaust to head connections. 99.9% of all Shovels leak there.

So when using the permatex with the SE gaskets, what is the method?  Insert the gaskets dry and then run a bead on top of it?  Something else?

I use the cometic evo style ex gaskets c9719-1 they work perfect with my dragula.Have had this exhaust off many times and have also found ,like the post above use 2 retainer rings per pipe.also use a lock washer then double nut em.

Great idea, will have to try that. I use Cometic extreme performance gaskets part # C9540 which come in a pack of 10.

Adds stability and rigidity to the clamping of the gasket. Pipes like D&D have a welded end that makes the clamping of the gasket to the head almost perfect every time.
