Doing a roller chain conversion on a basically stock 03 103" Reinharts, SE filter, DfO fuel box                                                                                                                                        1,what is the factory compression?
2,called Andrews ,Mike suggested the 37 what have folks here used same motor in a Andrews grind?
3, this bike has ate one starter clutch on hot starts, ready for its second one whats with the stock 253 cam that causes this it has a late int and early exh ?
4, as per question 3 thought I would install limiters although that would help cold starts more?

That 253 has got to be the strangest grind I have seen to date, with that late intake closing and 90 plus cc heads it should roll free. Just shows there is more to cam selection that intake close alone. As for what I have seen in these bikes we did a Redshift 575 which really woke the motor up and we didn't need releases either. You will need adjustable pushrods with this cam as the base circle is a bit smaller and it is not exactly a quiet cam. I believe my buddy still has them laying around since he moved on to a 120 since then. Could likely be had cheap. Your springs will easily handle the 575 lift so while I like the 37 you would be better with a bit more lift.
I also recall a 03 Road King 103 I dyno'd last year had 251's that ran pretty decent as well
If you don't have a sense of humor you probably have no sense at all.

The hard starts are eliminated when you get the tune right .
It might be cheaper to buy a good tuner and have it tuned .
The 253 works pretty darn good when tuned .
But
Had good luck with a Andrews 54 and SE 251 in the SE 103 motors
The 37 would make it feel good everywhere . But unless your gonna tune it proper, your gonna still have starting issues . Probably worse than now .

if you where going to pop the heads off to bump the compression a bit,ide look at the 54`s or S&S .570`s (set compression @ 10.0-1 for both)

rigidthumper

I've done a couple of those with S&S570s, set at 10:1, with good results.

Ignorance is bliss, and accuracy expensive. How much of either can you afford?

This is my 103 build.

Thanks guys, good stuff the customer is just barely swinging the conversion so unfortunately no extras or tuner . He is aware of some $$ in the near future for the hot start issue we have discuss releases and new starter clutch, if he had the money a better starter although a tuner would cost about the same as the releases or starter although my tuner experience is zilch but I can work with a PCIII now "Stroker " I assume the tune you mention is in the timing ? I don't think you can mess with starter timing on the PCIII can you? what is average chamber volume on the early 103 heads ?and the compression ratio ?

If the crank is straight enough, I would go S&S 570g es cams and cut the heads down to 85cc and it will run!

Here is our sheet on a CVO 103+
pretty much 120/120 with the 570SS ES gear drive cams.  Run file at top of Dyno sheet has our build specs. Hope that helps

I have a set of NIB 37N's and basically all the parts needed to do the conversion if your interested.   Rick
