Iridium is a super hard material.
It holds up well to heat and erosion and has excellent electrical conductivity.
You can produce a very small electrode with the stuff that requires less voltage to generate a spark.
They wear well and take it easy on your electrical system.
Oh, and they are trying to find the cure for cancer with them but, that's another story.... :potstir:

Correct me if I'm wrong about this, but the voltage required to jump a gap is determined by the size of the gap and the amount of the insulation (fuel and air within the gap acting as insulation).  I can't see where one plug is going to be "easier" on you coil(s) than another.

Do you understand what I=E/R means?  Cuz if you did you wouldn't have written requires less voltage to generate a spark,

You are grasping at straws with this discussion.  I'm done.

Too much horsepower is almost enough.

Until someone does a blind study with a bike on a dyno, and the dyno operator can not know which spark plugs are in the bike, I absolutely refuse to believe the more HP claim. Also, if there is a increase in HP if it was more than a couple percent I would be absolutely shocked. You probably could not duplicate back to back runs on a dyno within 2%.

The spark plugs might run more miles, but who cares? It is not like they are hard or expensive to replace. I run stock HD spark plus 30,000 miles, I have run them 45,000 miles, but they looked pretty bad by then. At 30,000 it was hard to see any wear on them. At 30,000 miles per change most riders would never have to replace them.

On the other hand run what you like, it is your money. If irridium plugs give you the warm fuzzies, then go for it!
I am an adult?? When did that happen, and how do I make it stop?!

Nowhereman

Aside from Phu Cat's bull"Potty mouth".
Demand more than often defines performance nowadays.
Denso has some plugs costing over $30.00 apiece.
Like you said, run what ever you like and if a certain plug runs good in your scoot, use it.
Plugs are cheap and being able to run a set for a year or two without worrying about any gap change is a nice thing.
Will you see more HP? Don't know but I use em for what they do and don't do.
And, HP increase was never a consideration.
Under extreme conditions for engines, they are the best solution going.

My Harley is the easiest machine I own to replace spark plugs on.  So yeah if you like to change plugs go for it. E=IR makes it sound like there would not be such a thing as a weak spark.

Iridium plugs have their place and benefit. I have trouble even considering that you could feel, much less measure an improvement on most any street Harley motors. Now bikes with 13:1 and higher compression, spinning at 10,000+ RPM, yes, there would be a difference in how the motor performs.

My Two Cents On It.

:agree:  If these were high compression engines it would make a difference.  We're talking air cooled pushrod technology.  Like others have said, if someone wants to change spark plugs less and pay more for doing it, more power to them.  I just doubt any noticeable difference.

I=E/R I= amperage, E= voltage, and R= resistance.  It's the formula for figuring how many amps will flow thru a known resistance at a known voltage.  Or you can change it around a little to figure how heavy of wiring you'll need if you know the size of a remote motor you could be running so you have the minimum wiring necessary for the length of those extension cords you've been borrowing from your neighbors and plugging together.(Long story short, unless all of your extension cords are ga. 12 for that 200 feet of cords you got hooked together you're probably gonna burn up your motor.  Aren't you glad you asked!

I tried the NGK iridium plugs on my 07 and the bike threw an intermittent spark code after about 2000 miles. Changed back to stock HD plug and no problems since. I could have gotten a faulty plug. It ran fine beforehand, but now I think I will stick to the basic plug built for the bike.

Well, heck.  This was just too good to pass up:

I'm not a big fan of those high dollar plugs. I did some dyno comparisons a while back and
they are nothing more than snake oil. They belong in the same bucket as those ridiculous hyper
chargers, or "big suckers". Big sucker is an appropriate name for that particular product. The
buyer of such nonsense is the "big sucker" though. LOL

FYI: Autolite's were as good as anything out there for a fraction of the price.

😈 (in my Allen Iverson voice) "Spark plugs? We talkin' spark plugs?  Man we ain't talkin' about racin'. We talkin' spark plugs."
Just carry a spare of which ever kind you like and your good to go.
I'm back out on the road again, turn this beast into the wind...

I know, it's all brilliant stuff.

pddredduece

what about the ping syncing for Delphi fuel injection. I used the ngk iridium plugs and got some bad gas. The motor kept pinging til I put back the stock Harley plugs

Mountainman streetbob

I just had 2 tuners today tell me to put in platinum plugs in my bike? BOTH suggested Harley's platinum plugs (one tuner is INDY)

What am I missing?

Platinum, Irridium, ???????????

NGK, Denso,  ????????????

Any suggestions   ???????????
