Kick starter shaft nut.

 I pulled off my kicker cover today on the 76 FXE so I could replace the kick lever shaft to the later style so I can install a swing out type kick arm.  When I removed the nut I found that the threads were pulled out of the nut.  So I need a new nut.  Can I just get a 1/2" X 20 nut from the hardware store or will I need to order the original type nut?

I would use a grade 8 nut, from wherever.
