Breather bore & gear lightly scored- reuse? New Plastic? S&S steel? Reed?

I was going to put my cam in today and with my work light I noticed the breather bore is a little scored.  There's a few grooves that I can catch a finger nail on...  I can post a pic if it helps.  Now my options besides pull the engine....  Oh, and it seemed to work fine before I took it apart.

1) Reuse what I have
2) New plastic gear
3) S&S steel
4) S&S reed

I want to get this put together ASAP.  Local dealer said nobody in a 90 min drive of me has a stock breather gear in stock... last one he sold was a year ago.

don't stay with the plastic,get a steel gear.100% fix would be to cut it .030 and use OS gear,but with the damage your describing,it would be alittle overkill

Hi there. S&S do a reed valve that slips into the crankcase recess that does not rotate and seems to do the job.

I've read both good and bad things about the reed valve.  I haven't seen anything negative about the s&s steel breather gear, other than it's almost $100.  So I'm going to run that.

..............and when those are really torn up, they offer a +.030" unit.
We've bored too many to recall.
Another thing that area missed years ago was the hole size in the cam chest.
We used to degree those and open them as per instructions from S&S.

Scott, what do you think?  Reed valve vs standard size steel gear?  It's not too late to change my order.  I don't think the bore is "torn up", but I can catch my finger nail on two of the grooves.

We like the conventional rotary gear here, and with only light abrasions as shown from your photos, you should be good. :up:
