Hi.  Does anyone have any advice on forward controls for a 1974 XLCH Sportster?

Hello mate
that would be an ironhead, so you should probably post there to get an answer this is for evo 86-up
I have fitted them to a 74 engine, they have the RH shifter. I kept it that way, but apparently you can put a crossover in so that they work with a conventional LH shift. this will mean also playing with the brake linkage too. Try one of the aftermarket places like v-twin or usa twins as they should have something. the '75-'76 engines i believe had this crossover put in as the cases were setup for RH shift but the bikes were sold with a LH shift setup, so that might give you a starting point if you decide to swap the sides.
If you can't fix it with a hammer and a roll of Duck tape then you're in trouble
